Empowerment is the running theme throughout this issue and many past issues of News Bytes. With the current budget situation, empowerment is a more powerful concept than ever. We all need to do our part to make it through these tough times. Full story

When the District’s servers and systems fall victim to abuse, attack or unauthorized use, Foothill and De Anza technology users feel the impact in terms of diminished productivity and sometimes even damaged systems and lost work.

To protect the District against such losses, ETS and ETAC have begun working on security policies and guidelines that will put into action a plan to heighten system security on both campuses within the calendar year. Full story

About two years ago, The Television Center changed its name to the Broadcast Media Center. The name change highlights the fact that the department provides services beyond television. In addition to three cable television channels, satellite uplink and downlink, ISDN and T1 videoconferencing, DVD and CD replication, the Broadcast Media Center has added video streaming to its menu of services. The goal of this column is to inform more people about IR research so that they can make more effective decisions throughout the District. I’ve been receiving more advertising on my office computer lately, but I’m especially concerned about an e-mail I received that was soliciting my help in opening a bank account in which to transfer $126 million from a bank in Africa. I’ve never received this kind of e-mail. Is it a scam? What should I do? Answer
