Robert's Biography

Robert Griffiths has been an instructional designer for Learning Technologies at Foothill – De Anza Community College district. since May, 2000. He was involved in the design and development of the following FHDA projects:

  • De Anza's first online Introduction to College (Couns 100) course.
  • Foothill's online Children’s Literature (Engl 8) course.
  • Foothill's new course, Applied Pharmacology in Dentistry, offered online in the Dental Hygiene program.
  • Learning Technologies’ Instructional Design Intensive, which he also co-moderated.

From 1998-2000, Robert had various roles at a start-up company called Global English, which provided online EFL (English as a Foreign Language) instruction and services. During the two years he was instructional designer, multimedia specialist, and production manager.

From 1994-1999, Robert was an ESL instructor at City College of San Francisco (CCSF). He taught part-time at Alemany, one of CCSF’s non-credit campuses. During that time, he also provided technology training for faculty and staff throughout the CCSF system. He was also involved in the development of computer-based training for employees of San Francisco International Airport, who needed training on how to operate the new equipment that was part of the new international terminal.

In the summer of 1995, Robert taught English composition for seven weeks in a private, non-profit program by Winrock International for Agricultural Economic scholars across China, hosted at China Agriculture University in Beijing.

From 1990-1993, Robert was an English instructor in the Department of Foreign Languages at Khon Kaen University in northeastern Thailand. He lived in a village outside of town, became fluent in Thai, and played two traditional ethnic Lao instruments, Kaen and Phin, for a local folk band.

From 1984-1987, Robert was a Peace Corps volunteer in rural northwestern Kenya, teaching English at a small village school. He became fluent in Swahili, and learned to play the Bukusu stringed instrument called the Litungu. After completing his service, he spent five and a half months travelling across Africa through, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zaire (Congo), Cameroun, Benin, Togo, Ivory Coast, Mali, Gambia, and Senegal.
